Despite Distance - Canon Fodder Issue 108

Updated: Jul 4, 2021

Although it has been a longstanding series, in recent years, the Canon Fodder articles have become much rarer as Infinite draws ever closer. Still, GrimBrother One wrote up a special article that introduces us to some lore on a few new Halo Infinite items. Let’s take a look!

“But speaking of exciting new chapters, in today’s edition, we’re very excited to talk a little bit more about a few elements I’m quite sure will have fiction fans incredibly enthused, starting with the reveal of a brand-new character you might find lurking silently in the shadows at some point in the Halo Infinite campaign.”

This sentence seems innocuous at first, just leading into the introduction of a new enemy in Halo Infinite. However, the mention of this character “lurking silently in the shadows” seems a little too close to Silent Shadow to ignore. The Silent Shadow was a collection of Elite spec ops assassin units in the Covenant that would hunt down and execute high-value targets. Many of them ultimately decided to join Atriox’s Banished after the fall of the Covenant, and they served him well.

“In hushed whispers throughout the ranks of the Banished, Jega ‘Rdomnai’s name is spoken of with care. The blademaster’s history is shrouded in rumor and half-truths. Some say he was an experiment, an affront to his own kind. Others make mention of a clandestine ambush gone wrong. Very few know the truth, fewer still speak of it. One thing is certain: he has hunted demons before, and as the first recruit welcomed into the Hand of Atriox, he will do so again.”

As one of the coolest looking Elites to be in a Halo game, Jega ‘Rdomnai sounds like a very intimidating villain. Clearly having made an impression on Atriox, this Elite will certainly put the Chief to the test in Halo Infinite.

“A mysterious and battle-ravaged Sangheili warrior, Jega represents one of several new characters that you will encounter along your way through the Halo Infinite campaign, with each confrontation playing its own part in Chief’s continuing journey.”

This sentence doesn’t tell us much, but it indicates that named enemies in the Banished with their own histories will be featured in great detail throughout Halo Infinite. It is exciting to think about how the Chief will encounter and interact with these different enemies, and it provides great opportunities for characterizing the Banished in a diverse way.

“Created with input from Dr. Halsey herself, the latest Mark VII iteration refreshes the Mjolnir technical architecture with breakthroughs in neural interfaces, shield emitters, fusion power, and armor formulation.
The Mark VII designation refers to a number of prototype platforms that test the ever-evolving Mjolnir Generation 3 standard. The most recent design to bear the name was selected by Dr. Halsey from Materials Group's KEYSTONE development program.”

Although perhaps not as noteworthy as the section on Jega ‘Rdomnai, we also get a few details on the Mark VII Gen 3 MJOLNIR armor set. This armor was designed in part by Dr. Halsey, indicating that she has had a renewed role in developing weapons and tools for war following the rise of Cortana and the other Created.

Summary

Although perhaps not as heavy on the gameplay details, this Canon Fodder article is rich with new story information for Halo Infinite.

  • Jega ‘Rdomnai is a Banished Elite antagonist that Chief will encounter in Halo Infinite.

  • ‘Rdomnai is likely a former member of the Silent Shadow, and he is a current member of the Hand of Atriox.

  • ‘Rdomnai has a mechanical arm and two mechanical mandibles according to his concept art.

  • Dr. Halsey has once again become involved in designing new MJOLNIR armor suits, including the Mark VII Gen 3 armor set, following the rise of Cortana and the Created.
